First thing I noticed was a new fence and office trailer at the range. Wilson Shoals is now a supervised range with range officers. You must sign in when you arrive. That's a good thing. It shows the range is being used which will ensure that it stays open and receives funding. I signed a "pen name." ;)

The range officer today was a really nice older gentleman. He did his job well and let people know what the rules were and if they broke them he was quick to tell them. Wilson Shoals range info can be found here (as well as all WMA shooting ranges). There were 6 or 8 "target stands" that were left behind by others. You probably want to bring your own in case those get destroyed. They were in various stages of destruction.

My friend Justin, my oldest son Michael, and I arrived about 11:30am with a sack full of burgers. Yeah, we knew we would be there a while! Justin brought his M4, Kimber Tactical Custom II, Glock 19, Walther P22, and Remington 700 Sendero SF II in 7mm. I brought my XD40SC, S&W .38/.44 Heavy Duty, S&W 642, Marlin 60, GP WASR10 AK47, and my son brought his new CZ 452 Scout. The short of it is, we arrived at 11:30am and left the range at 5pm. The boy could have stayed all night, as usual.

I enjoyed the M4, but I was surprised at how heavy it was. The 100 round drum made it even heavier! The Remmy 700 was a sweet shooter. You have to work hard to screw up a bullseye with that thing. I got to shoot several magazines full of good old .45ACP with the Kimber. It fit my hand so well and felt so good that I wanted to run out and get one immediately.

My boy broke in his CZ. It wasn't long before he was pulling off shots quicker than Lee Harvey Oswald at the book depository! That kid must have shot 250 rounds of .22LR today! He got some shooting time with the P22 as well. The boy's a trooper... what can I say? 8) But the highlight was him shooting the M4 with the .22LR conversion. He ended up with permagrin from shooting that evil looking machine. :rifle:

I got to break in my AK. I cleaned her up real nice the other day and got her ready for the big date. I'm in love. I loaded up a 30 round magazine and fired the first round. PERFECT. I fired the next 29 without any real attempt at good aim. I just wanted to get the feel for it. I was hooked. The next magazine revealed that it was shooting about 4 inches left. I worked the front sight until it was on target at 50 yards. Good enough for today. We put about 250 rounds through it overall. Not a single failure.

I practiced some more with my main squeeze, the XD40SC. Shot the wife's S&W snubbie, too. Fierce little bastard! I shot the heirloom S&W heavy duty, but the old timing problem returned. I had it worked over a year ago for timing issues. Grrrrrr... I need someone who really knows older S&W N frames.

A great day at the range, and here's the pics to prove it:

The boy looks like a natural! I bet you're proud!

And that M4 is sweet... the range looks nice, too.

Sounds like a fun day! What kind of hearing protection was your friend wearing? That looks very comfortable, though the electronics are probably expensive to match :(

Crap, I knew I should have gone there yesterday. :D

I was planning on heading there but got caught up with work. It's great to know that they now have this as a supervised range. I just wished they would fix a couple of shooting lanes for folks who want to shoot pistol while standing. Last time I was there I couldn't stand and shoot.

Looks like you two had a great time.

I forgot to take pictures of any dead paper targets. My boy had a few to be proud of, too.
