So I'm trying to figure out how weird this was...

A repairman for the complex knocked on the door. These guys only wear a t shirt that has the complex name on it and is freely available to anyone who lives here (and presumable anyone else). As always I answer the door Hk in hand but out of sight.

He is holding a fan repair kit for a bathroom. He says he needs to replace the upstairs bathroom fan. My roommate's gf is there and I ask her is she knows about it and she confirms there is a problem. So I let him in.

He's there for about 15 minutes and in that time my roommate's gf leaves. So I'm sitting on the coach with my Hk on the coffee table with a loose piece of paper over it. Guy comes down the stair and says he is done and walks out.

Ten minutes later I hear a knock at the door. Peep through the hole and it is the same guy. (gun in hand) I answer the door. He says he left his cell phone and pager upstairs, and can he go get it? I say sure and he goes up the stairs. I have the Hk hidden at my side the whole time. When he comes down he says "um...the computer upstairs on the right side is making some sounds like it wants someone to check it out." I say something like "what?" he then says maybe I should check it out. I look at him for a good second and tell him I'll just check it out later. He walks out the door and I lock it behind him.

I go upstairs to my roommate's room and look at the computer...the CPU is unplugged and off.

I see this and then I was like "wtf was that guy thinking..."

what say you?

I would report it to the office and state that he is no longer allowed in your apartment unless someone is home. Definitely weird. Do a check for cameras, etc. especially if he saw the girlfriend. In the future, I would retrieve the forgotten items and make him wait outside. I always make it a practice to linger around while repairmen are at my house and make smalltalk. I offer them water, etc. They think I am being nice. However, I am just observing them and and making sure they are on the up-and-up.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I say it is odd that your room mate unplugs his computer.
We all work on computers. It's semi normal.
Good to know I'm not the only one who disconnects the intertubey cable from my private computer when I go AFK.

The server, no, but then again there's nowhere near the amount of personally identifiables on the server.

The repairmen here don't come in unless I've asked them to.

They dropped by to change the air filter a month or so ago... I just told them to leave the new filter outside. You don't need to come in to do that.

I've made it very clear to the leasing agents, the manager, and the maintenance folks that I like my privacy and really appreciate it if someone calls before they come over or try to come in, as I tend to work weird hours and I'd rather be awakened by a phone call than by a repairman stumbling in.

+1,000 on this. When we lived in apartments I made this clear too. I never want anyone in my house unless I am there. Too many weirdos in the world. Then there is the liability issue since we all have guns on the premises too.

Besides, GSUSNAKE has that bugout box going with lots of goodies already packed up and ready for some would-be thief to make off with.

I actually haven't put that together yet.

It's the guns I worry about.

Our maintenance people have been told to knock loudly and announce themselves clearly.

At first they did not realize we were not playing around so we put a sign in the window that says:

WARNING

THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE IS AUTHORIZED
Kinda hard to miss as you come up the steps.

Yep, good sign. I can't wait to be my own property owner. Apartments are leased properties. They can do what they want, essentially. Again, read your lease. I probably got screwed on the part that says they can enter during reasonable hours for inspection or maintenance or some crap. Not like they ever show up anyway. If they do, it's some stupid CA person doing something pointless.
