Police say they were told that both men wore handkerchiefs over their faces and that when the woman saw them coming, she ran out the back door for help.

That's when the tables were turned.

Police say one of the intruders suffered a gun shot to the thigh.

9News was also told that he also suffered severe head trauma from being beaten.

Police say they expect him to survive.

Sounds more like the neighbors shot him, then beat the hell out of him (or the other way around) before the police arrived. I guess there point is that the neighbors came over to apprehend him instead of waiting for police. Thats about the only thing I can think of.
