A 91-year-old man is recovering after he was attacked by a carjacker in Detroit, police said.

Deontae Bradley, 22, was formally charged with felony carjacking and assault Friday. According to police, Bradley stole Leonard Sims' car and beat him repeatedly in the face. The entire attack was caught on tape.

Sims, a retired World War II veteran, said he does not believe the charges are harsh enough.

"He could have killed me. He should be charged with attempted murder," Sims said.

He also said it is a sad state of society that there were so many people standing by watching and not doing anything.
He does have a message for Bradley, "I would say turn his life around. Go to school. Get a job and work for a living, not steal it."

Bradley is in the Wayne County Jail on $75,000 bond Monday.
Watch the video. I couldn't, in good conscience stand there and watch this happen. I hope they sleep well at night knowing they could have very well watched a man die to their trepidity. Or else we can blame the system. Hell, the police don't want us to get involved anyway.

I wonder what advice the cops would give to old people to protect themselves? I don't think vomiting or using a nail file would work. Maybe play dead? God forbid they use a firearm.

And what's with the 75k bond? Different states I know, but the Georgia student who got arrested for "aggravated assault" for having a gun in his own home was denied bail. This guy beat down a senior citizen and could realistically be out by now. It's not like you have to get the whole amount.

I wonder what would have happened if someone shot and killed this animal? Would he or she have been arrested and charged if the suspect didn't have a weapon? Would he or she be crucified in the media for using deadly force to stop such a vicious attack? I have grandfather around that age, and to witness that would be shock to the system, but I believe I would have suspend all inhibitions take that mf'er out. Just my :2cents: :minigun:

I agree completely with everybodys thoughts. People have lost the desire to help a fellow human. That is a pretty easy scenario seeing an old man getting beat down. Other events may not be that easy to decide who is the good guy.

But geez this one is pretty clear........

Tonight on CNN, a familt man is shot dead in the street following a disagreement and what the local police are doing to ensure these random acts of violence end soon.

My oldest son lives in So. Cal. and the other day he was boxed in by several cars of mexicans who started a fight. At first only one came at him and he didn't realise that there were any more until he had that one down on the ground and the others blind-sided him. This was on a busy street in heavy traffic and no one did anything to help him except dial 911. The 5 mexicans actually lost the intitial battle and the originator of the fight took off in his car while the others tried to prevent my son from following.
Long story short, the originator just got out of prison 3 weeks ago and was looking for a fight. My son is OK except for a few bruises and cuts, and the cops have the tags and descriptions of all the perps.
My son is prohibited from owning any weapons because last year when he caught his wife(and my 2 year old grandson) with her boyfriend he threatened to put a bullet in their heads and was convicted of "Misdemeanor verbal spousal abuse"!

Now that I've got my morning dose of sarcasm out of the way...

It's a razor thin line we, as CCW folk, walk. I was talking with a co-worker and fellow shooter about this the other day, recounting the times where we see something potentially about to go wrong and decide at what point would we intervene (neither of us have been close to it - yet). Most packers have a bit of a built in, mentally rehearsed checklist as to when the moment arrives that somebody's livelihood hangs in the balance, a moment where action could save (or not), but when inaction would almost certainly result in a far worse outcome (general media and "peace-at-any-price" types aside).

In a sense, I wonder if we've made the checklist too long, with so many safeguards, feedback loops, and whatnot keeping us from making a decision when a person's life is clearly in jeopardy. Some of our own sayings in the gun community bear a bit of this out - "graveyards are full of heroes" being one of them.

Maybe we, as a society and CCWers, have become more passive than we realize.

And that is a perfect example of why you keep one in the pipe.

But it'd probably be me that went to jail if I came up behind that guy and put a bullet in his brain.

What kind of man would not make such a threat in that circumstance, even if it was impotent?

What's wrong with simply rendering him unconscious with blows to the head and calling the police?
