A new law took effect last month that allows the carrying of firearms on college campuses. But that does not mean students may carry their weapons on campus with impunity, as an incident that occurred Sunday afternoon helped illustrate.
At about 2:15 p.m. Sunday, the University of Georgia Police Department responded to a residence at University Village on College Station Road.
During a physical altercation, Zhang allegedly pushed his wife into the wall several times in an attempt to knock her to the ground, police said.
While investigating, police said they learned that Zhang had recently bought a gun and accessories without his wife's knowledge. That included speed loaders, extra magazines and ammo, and pistol grip back straps, according to police.

UGA police said they heard over radio traffic that Zhang was in investigative detention off campus. He was subsequently arrested for family violence simple battery and possession of a weapon in a school safety zone, police said.
