Once every so often (maybe every other month), my five year old daughter will move her head a little and then quickly start crying.

Where she points to the pain is not her neck, but around ear lob level toward the back left side of her skull.

The research I've done points to a fairly common but benign condition in young children, but I want to get some thoughts from you all.

Of course, she will see a doctor very soon. I just hate having her get radiation, but I think an X-ray may be in order now.

I had that, or something similar when I was a kid. It would be a sharp pain and then burn. But I pushed through it cause I was tough.

Seriously you might should consult someone.

xray of the head won't determine anything really. Top of ear lobe or bottom?

Get the films. If indicative of something but not detailed, get the MRI or CT or whatever. Check you PMs.

More toward the top of the lobe but around toward the back a little.

There are quite a few things that could be going on. Definitive study would be MRI. CT is necessary first step in most cases and sometimes can rule out or in various potential diagnoses.

Looking at the symptoms of mastoid infection, she doesn't have that.

Is there another condition that can cause mastoid pain every once in a while?
