That school hostage taking incident in some other state ended badly. CNN reports that after negotiations broke down and the gunman (adult) had become more and more crazy, SWAT stormed the building. The gunman reacted to the SWAT entry team by shooting at them, then shooting one of his two hostages dead, and then shooting himself. The report does not say if he was even fired on.

Although we don't know the details, who thinks that somebody messed up here? Any suggestions about how this could have been done better? Bad guys facing a SWAT team should not have the time to fire several rounds at three different targets before being cut down or otherwise incapacitated.

The Russians seemed to have a good idea about putting sleeping gas vapor into the air ducts for the building. Of course in the USA, we'd figure out the dose a little more accurately so as not to poison half the hostages to death.

    Depends on the school's layout.

My old high school had a main hallway 1/4 of a mile long. Even if they came at them from both ends that is a long way to get to the center.

On the other hand, if he had plenty of time I would think that all the hostages would have been dead or at least shot. If only one hostage plus himself are injured/killed it may be that was his shield and he only had enough time to pull the trigger twice.

Crazed gunman storms into school looking for helpless victims. Teacher, principal, and parent all get bunched together in the doorway as they try to get the first shot off, but the janitor in the hallway has nobody around him and a clear backstop and consequently saves the day by sending two 230 grain federal Hydrashocks through the gunman's thoracic cavity, followed swiftly by one more round throught he cranial cavity when the janitor mistakes a jerky motion for a failure to cease hostile motion.

Or as the AJC, Washington Post and CNN will say:
Gun Battle at Shool, Children Traumatized

It will either be about how a crazed gunman was not allowed to follow through his plans (may not even mention the Janitor) OR it will be about how we were not sure of the disturbed persons' plans so the shooting by a mere janitor was not justified, leading to a call for a new law about not firing until fired upon.

Nancy Grace will interview the Janitor in hopes he too will commit suicide and further boost her ratings.
