I read with some interest your slanted twist about the proposed gun bans in Illinois. I was just wondering about your poll? Do you tell the people any of the facts before you poll them or do you give them your slanted emotional routine and then poll them?
Just to set the playing field straight; I am not some right wing gun radical but I am a retired police officer with a college degree and more than 28 years of law enforcement experience. It really upsets me when I see groups like you trying to emotionally influence people instead of telling the truth. After all if you told the truth you would not have any case.
These gun bans will do absolutely nothing to improve safety in Illinois. They will in fact have just the opposite effect as criminals will not have to worry about being confronted by armed law abiding citizens. Very few of the banned guns have been used or are used in crimes. These guns are hard to conceal and the criminal prefers something smaller and cheaper he can use and then throw away. As for the .50 cal.: if that isn’t the biggest bunch of bull. Your group should be locked up for even suggesting they be banned because of the potential for harm to the citizens of Illinois. There have not been any cases that I am aware of in Illinois or in the country where a .50 cal. was used in a crime. The .50 cal. is much too heavy and too expensive for criminals to use. The idea that a .50 cal. could be used to shoot down an airliner is so far fetched that I fail to have words to describe it. It is quite obvious that none of you know much about firearms.
I will agree that it is devastating when someone is shot with a gun but what you fail to report is all of the good things related to guns. How many lives have guns saved? Oh wait you are not interested in that statistic as it doesn’t serve your purpose. How much revenue do the sale of guns, ammunition and the shooting sports bring to Illinois? Oh wait you don’t care about that either. What are these anti-gun bills going to cost the citizens of Illinois when you drive manufacturers with government contracts out of the state, cause families to have to relocate, close businesses that employ thousands state wide and add the number of state employees it will take to process all of the paper work these bills will create? That’s alright; the already overburdened tax payers can pick up the tab for the loss of revenue. And what about the rising crime rate when these bills pass? Who is going to protect the citizen of the state? Currently there are approximately 12 million citizens in Illinois and approximately 50,000 police officers. When you factor out the administrative people and allow for shift work that only leaves about 15,000 officers on duty at any one time (per shift). Now let’s not forget that some of these officers will be in two man cars, some will be on vacation, some will be on sick leave and the remaining officers need a day off now and then. That leaves one officer to protect about three thousand people unless he is called to backup some other officer, handle an accident, work a special detail or provide an escort for some over-sized truck. Oh and did you know that as a group law enforcement officers are some of the worst shots around. They only shoot about once a year and use the simplest qualification course and then there are still some who cannot qualify. Personally I’d rather depend on myself to protect my family.
I really do not appreciate you infringing on my second amendment rights either. So far most courts including a recent ruling by the DC Appeals court have ruled that citizens have an individual right to own firearms. I see no point in debating the issue here but I would suggest that you study history and the meaning of militia to know exactly what our forefathers had in mind when they wrote the constitution. If you anti-gunners get your way it will be the beginning of the end for the US as we know it today. All one needs to do is look at England, Canada, and Australia to see how ineffective gun bans, registration and confiscation can be. It seems some people never learn from history and have to be taught all over again, prohibition did not work and neither will any of these anti-gun bills. I am just wondering are you trying to create another Nazi Germany? You can argue that the police and military are there to protect us. I have already addressed the issue with the police but both the police and the military are in the same boat, they follow the orders of their commander even if they are wrong. That has already been proven in New Orleans where police and soldiers entered law abiding citizens home illegally at the orders of the mayor and police chief. Is this the situation you really want?
And I would just like to let you know that I do know what I am talking about. As I started at the beginning I am a retired law enforcement officer and I have been in the trenches not some bureaucrat sitting behind a desk. I have worked the streets for most of my career while also serving on the Tactical Response Team, a Sniper, and have handled crimes against people (murder, rape, assault). I have been in the trenches and seen the aftermath of what happens but I have also been involved with people who were able to protect themselves because the police were not available. Even though I saw nothing in your poll to indicate crimes against police I would also like to say that police killing by firearms have dropped and are now surpassed by officer killed in vehicle accident according to the FBI crime statistics.
Because you are an Anti-gun organization I have serious doubts about the accuracy of your poll. I have done my own unofficial poll and have found when citizens are properly informed of the facts about guns they do not support gun control. I have already expressed my unofficial poll findings to my legislator and expressed my concerns with your poll.
What I have not heard from any of the anti-gun groups is how they intend to safeguard the citizens of Illinois from the criminal element who preys on the weak. As a former law enforcement officer I would feel much safer if every law abiding citizen were armed.
