I got a little bored over the weekend and polished the barrel on my G32. I like it just as well as I did when it was black, so the entire exercise turned out to be a colossal waste of time. I supose I'll at least post a picture in case any of you want to give it a shot. It doesn't look bad...
the Melonite finish penetrates the stainless steel of the barrel, unless I'm mistaken. He's merely removed the colorization from the phosphating. (Did I even spell that right? )
Aye. The Tenifer treatment leaves the metal a dull gray. The black is standard parkerizing, as evidenced by the worn corners on my old G21. I suppose it might be possible to polish off the Tenifer layer, but that would mean removing something like .5mm of metal, and you'd definitely notice the change in fit...
No damage done to the barrel: I used 1200 grit sandpaper with Flitz polishing compound. It only took about 4 hours.
