Police officer's son accidentally shoots self with gun

JONESBORO, Ga. Authorities say the three-year-old son of a police officer fatally shot himself in an accidental shooting early this morning.

Clayton County police Captain Robert Tomlin says the accident happened shortly after midnight when Marcus Kitt found the gun in a closet in his parents' bedroom.

His mother woke up to the sound of the gunfire.

His father, a Henry County police officer was in Texas on business.

Relatives say the boy dreamed of being a police officer.

Just another painfull example of how the folks that everyone assumes are "experts" tend to be less responsible and safety minded than you or I... Too bad an inocent kid has to pay the price for his parents lack of judgement.

What a tradegy. The parents will never get over it and the kid will never get to grow up.

I wish you hadn't posted that one Gunns... I surprised myself because I almost cried when I read it.

Damn! What a horrible thing to have happen.

What a tragedy. I really feel for the family

This is why I have a handgun safe with myself as the only one with access. I just couldn't trust a locked closet where other people could get in.

Sad indeed, but I'm also waiting to see if charges will be filed as they almost always are in the case of a civilian firearm being left where a child finds and discharges it.
