In case you didn't know, the vote to reinstate the Patriot Act is tomorrow, I believe.

A good article and a great read.

Stop the police state, repeal the PATRIOT Act.

We must not allow the out-of-control Department of Homeland Security to impose an East-German like police state in the U.S. where neighbors are encouraged by Big Brother or Big Sister to inform on their neighbors. We must not accept that government authorities should hector us via television screens as we go about our private lives like we are living in Orwell’s 1984.

I’m optimistic that the incoming members of Congress understand the importance of what they have been entrusted with by the American people. But I do hope that those who elected them will watch their actions and their votes in Congress carefully. An early indication will be the upcoming vote on re-authorization of the anti-American PATRIOT Act. Defeating once-and-for-all this police state legislation will be a great way to start 2011 and the 112th Congress.
Please call or fax your representatives and tell them to repeal the Patriot Act, and to not let this continue.

Here is also a comment from below the story that I find to be quite true:

When Bush implemented this after 9/11â€"mainstream media and the leftists went nuts.

Fast forward to last year. Obama had is reinstated with a few additions caveatsâ€"one removing the Sunset Clause Bush included in his version. Now this thing is permanent unless Congress chooses to repeal it.

Odd, I didn't hear one word from the left or the mainstream media when Obozo did this. Guess the Libs think they can be "trusted" with this kind of power. Talk about being hypocritical.

And where was the ACLU when this went down? The silence was deafening.
No political party, Democrat or Republican can be trusted with this power. Not to mention that the warrantless wiretaps are completely Unconstitutional, IMHO, and the Porno Scanners and full body searches are as well.

But because Republicans used a process known as "suspension of the rules," a 2/3rds super-majority was needed for approval of the bill, and the GOP fell short of that number.

wtf?
What drtybykr said.

On Tuesday night, it was an extension of three expiring provisions of the anti-terror Patriot Act that were defeated, even though a strong majority of the House favored the bill.

It will be back soon enough...since they now see that they can pass it with a simple majority... :puke:

It does boggle the mind that dirty legislation can keep coming back after being defeated...I wish my favorite sports teams got "do-overs" when they weren't able to win the big games, etc...

I agree. Sure some had "cover," but we at least have the voting on record.

Basically, the GOP wanted to railroad it through without any amendments being tacked on to it. So, they suspended the rules to disallow amendments. However, when they do this they need a 2/3 majority to pass it.

Now that it failed to pass this way, it's going back to the floor for debate and amendments, which means the bill could change for both good or bad. They could amend it to remove some of the provisions. They could amend it to extend the sunset date to 3 years instead of 1.

I don't understand why this thing passes. It's unpopular amongst most liberals (the ACLU and other left-wing civil rights groups oppose it), it's unpopular amongst libertarians, and from what I'm made to believe, it's unpopular amongst tea party conservatives. WHO THE HELL KEEPS VOTING THIS THING IN?

Looks like mostly the Republicans keep voting for this thing. :screwy:
Republicans almost always run on strong national security and strong military platforms. I guess they think they'll look weak if they vote against anything that has to do with "national security", even if it's a terrible idea.

This is why I am almost DONE voting for Republicans. Its just amazing that this thing will probably get a new vote with amendments tacked on to it. I just hope some of the Democrats (liberals) get rid of the warrantless wiretaps, and it would be nice if they got rid of the TSA and DHS as well.

I know there is almost know hope of this happening, but I'm trying to remain optimistic.
