http://koin.com/2016/06/26/woman-shoots-kills-man-inside-her-se-portland-home/

A Southeast Portland mom shot and killed a man who was found inside one of her children's bedrooms early Sunday morning, police said.
The 33-year-old woman returned to her home on the 4100 block of SE 118th Place with her 2 kids when she encountered 59-year-old David Daniel McCrary, police said. She reportedly used her own handgun to shoot and kill him.
Investigators say McCrary has no connection to the family and isn't from the neighborhood. He doesn't have a significant criminal history but reportedly struggled with mental health issues in the past, police said.

I just saw this in the news myself. THIS is why I carry (and presumably why most of us do). It's not ego or compensation, it's for self-preservation and protection of family.

He says exceptions come into play when the intruder is a known to the homeowner and, perhaps, has been invited over before.
"It's like Kramer in 'Seinfeld'. That's a good example," said Kroll. "When Kramer slides into Jerry's apartment, he's not there to commit a crime. He's welcome there. It's a normal thing. So jerry couldn't pull out a gun and shoot him under Oregon's laws."

One article I read says this intruder was not known to the family.

Ford remains cooperative with investigators and was not arrested. The investigation, which is ongoing, will determine whether she acted in self defense and if she'll face charges.
WAT?
II can understand the purpose of the exception in the law and would expect the police not to make any early calls without checking off that box. Stranger things have happened.

I'm not aware of an article that says he actually was.
some of the oregon folks are arguing that the house was vacant and had squatters. the family recently moved in, and they don't think the squatter may have known. i'm not agreeing that any of it matters, i'm just letting you know where that line of thinking comes from.

I should think the presence of furniture in the little girl's room and things being cleaned up should have given the intruder a clue that the home was no longer vacant and open to squatters . . .

That's probably one of the least insane lines of crazy thinking I've heard around here the last week.

Some folks around here want this project to get off the ground, to save the lives of upstanding citizens like David Daniel McCrary:
