That article is illuminating in more ways that the probate judge could have dreamed.

It is nice to see a probate judge who claims to ba an ardent gun rights advocate, however, rather than the usual mishmash of people who neither carry nor even own (nor have ever bought) a gun.

Under federal law, a person convicted of a misdemeanor family violence is prohibited from possessing any kind of firearm unless the person is able to obtain a pardon.
Hmmmm. I think I'm as opposed to "family violence" as the next guy, but this sounds a bit troubling.

Crimes which are not actually prohibitors or disqualifiers can keep a license from being issued if those crimes call into question the applicant's moral character.
Argh. You can't have a permit if you have committed any crime that the judge thinks should disqualify you. Maybe even if you weren't convicted. Maybe even if the judge simply thinks that your manner of dress is indicative of a lack of moral character. Yeah ... that's what I call shall issue.
