President Obama nominated Andrew Traver yesterday to be the new Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. He is currently the Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Field Division and knew Obama from when Obama was a Senator from Illinois.

I have been following Traver since mid-summer when speculation began that would be the new head of ATF. I have compiled a bit of background on Traver. More can be found with a Google search. He sounds like a nice enough guy but not the guy you would want as the head of ATF unless you are the Brady Campaign or VPC.

Time to start calling your Senators and making noise about this nomination as it has to be approved the Senate.

Hi John, thanks for the excellent post. I was actually about to post this, when I saw you had already done so.

I was directed to your great site, once again from mention in this article: http://www.examiner.com/gun-rights-in-s ... batfe-head

This, no doubt, will immensely please the Brady Campaign, who will probably try to imply that it was their complaining--and complaining (pdf file)--that inspired this action.

That Traver's would be the name eventually submitted has been suspected for months, with the first (to my knowledge) to bring up the possibility being Mike Vanderboegh, back in early July. In that post, Mr. Vanderboegh documented some of Traver's hostility to the right to keep and bear arms:...

Update: No Lawyers - Only Guns and Money has much more. This is a blog I have only recently become aware of, and I regret that I have not been following it all along. It's very well done.
Emphasis Mine.

This fellows anti-gun zealotry certainly worries me quite a good bit.

By the way, John, your website, and articles on No Lawyers - Only guns and Money is a huge favorite of mine, and I've been following it for a little while. Your articles are very well done. I really enjoy them a good bit.

Andrew Traver: Is Obama's choice for ATF chief an 'antigun zealot'?

But the idea of an ATF director who hails from Chicago, a city without gun shops, and who has conflated black market automatic weapons with legal semi-automatic "assault-style" rifles is causing Second Amendment defenders to worry that President Obama intends to blast away at gun rights by force of bureaucracy, if not law.

"This is a demonstration that Obama has ... the same attitudes about Second Amendment rights now as he did [when he was an Illinois state senator], which is quite hostile," says Dave Kopel, research director at the Independence Institute, a nonpartisan think tank in Golden, Colo., that promotes free-market ideas. "He's picked a strong anti-Second Amendment person for an administrative job that has far more influence over the practical exercise of Second Amendment rights than any other job in the country."...

Agent Traver has lent his name and his agency’s clout to the usual range of anti-gun causes, including: repealing the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the use of the ATF’s firearms database to criminal investigations, forcing gun-grabbers and class-action lawyers to gather their own data.
