or in your pocket anywhere in MA.

The good part of the article is sourcing details.

What 'sourcing details' ?

The author of the CNN article got his information from the TSA official in Boston,
who said the TSA looked at the company website of the firm that made this straw/dagger and advertises it as a defensive weapon.

Seems like a reasonable thing to do to me.

( as for the guy that bought this thing and brought it on his carry-on luggage, the phrase
"play stupid games, win stupid prizes"
comes to mind.)
It appears the article has been edited, deleting that reference.

The manufacture describes and sells it as a weapon. Why would the TSA or the state of Mass consider it anything else?
Dont know how effective it would be as a weapon without tearing your own hand up
Its only sharp on one end. The sharp end is pointed toward the bad guy.

Thats how you do not hurt yourself.

It's knurled on the drinking end but that doesn't look like it would give you a good purchase if you're engaged in some "frisky" drinking. Perhaps a thicker, grippier area to prevent you from dropping your straw into your milkshake.
How about number 2 pencils?
