I'm browsing through an old National Geographic from February 1984 .

In an article about rural West Texas and how the cowboy lifestyle has never gone away there, they interview an old woman (born about 1909) who has a .38 pistol for home defense.

That's nice, but a 5-shot small frame revolver is kinda weak in the home defense role. I would expect even an elderly rancher woman who grew up in the rough and tumble old west to know that.
Even if her gun does have a 3 inch barrel !
A 12 gauge shotgun, or a lever action rifle in 44 or 45 caliber, would surely be a lot more intimidating to bad guys and more effective if it came right down to using it.

The woman could have an issue with handling recoil or some physical ailment making the pistol the only option or ???

Regardless, still better than a dildo.

The .38 special was the defacto defense handgun of that day.

I was thinking that for a woman born in west Texas in the early 1900's, the types of guns we use today in Cowboy Action Shooting events would be good choices.
