I'm trying to figure out what sort of options exist for a rifle (not carbine) I'd like to have. Here are the parameters:

- chambered in .308
- semi-automatic
- wood stock (not laminated)
- built to accept optics
- has iron sights
- removable magazine (preferable to have options with 10+ capacity)

Additionally, something in .30-06 could also be acceptable. As is probably somewhat obvious, an M14 would fit the bill here, but they are very expensive for some reason. I am looking for some alternatives that would be less expensive.

Thanks for any suggestions you have.

Optics are mount specific, but this is as close as I can get....

Great find, Sheriff! ......And, made in the USA!
CETME would be the most accessible.

Other options include:
- FN FAL/L1A1
- AR-10
- HK91/PTR91

Well, at least the receiver is... and the requisite number of components. ;)
Wood stock?

I think you can get the AR-10 with a wood stock for both the butt stock and the fore-end handguard.

I made the choice 25 years ago to get the Spingfield Armory M1A, along with a clamp-on scope mount (the simple and inexpensive kind with just one attachment knob and no engagement to the stripper clip guide slot) and a fairly cheap common deer rifle scope, fixed 4X power.

I don't regret my choice. Looks good. With several 20-round mags it's a zombie slayer. With a 5 or 10 round mag in place it's a hunting rifle. I've used it on deer. I've taken the scope off and used it to get good scores in some highpower rifle matches.
The cetme also uses hk mags, which can be had for less than a buck apiece at CTD.

Almost. Century builds are cut up Spanish rifles that are put back together with new receivers and 922r parts. Also, there's issues with some Century builds, you either get a winner or a loser. And some of them might even be dangerous, the Century monkeys at one time were grinding bolt faces down to get headspace... that could be dangerous.

My suggestion in this department would be to get a new PTR-91 (not an AW serial number one) and put original German wood furniture on it. The PTRs have picatinny rails already on top for optics mounting. German wood furniture set 19 bucks. As mentioned, mags are cheap right now.

It would look something like this except imagine a picatinny rail setup instead of the claw mount:

Don't forget the Springfield M1A. :righton:

That one yours? That's a fine looking CETME right there. :righton:

OP: What did you decide? Did you like our ideas or did you find something else? Inquiring minds want to know.
