MP's thread about speed limits on I-16 got me thinking

1549 Views 45 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  Savvy Jack
Every morning I drive 30 miles on I-16 going to work in Savannah. I usually travel around 80 mph. I get passed by Chatham county peace officers (deputies and officers) like I am standing still. This morning it was a Laurens County deputy. They were doing at least 100 - no lights, no sirens and weaving in and out of traffic. Last Thursday an unmarked Chatham police car with four officers inside was harassing everyone that tried to pass him as he did 72 in the left hand lane all the way to Savannah from Hwy. 280. He would speed up trying to block them in and if they managed to get in front of him anyway, he would turn on his blue lights until they got back over then pass them and resume his 72 mph. He did this at least 15 times. I rode behind him the whole time (and got brake checked several times for my trouble). He lit me up twice before he slammed on his brakes. This is the only picture I got and it's pretty crappy. He is brake checking me while I am several car lengths back - I think he saw my camera flash.

What a douche bag. :screwy:

One more incident where LEO's think they are above the law and don't have to follow it. As far as Laurens county goes........Give Sheriff Harrell a call, he is a real down to earth guy and I don't think he would stand for a transport deputy driving like that.
If you want or need his number I can get it for you.
Don't wait to call until everybody forgets who these four jackasses are. If you call today, they will know who they are . . .

Using lights in a non-emergency, nontraffic stop

Unmarked car using its lights

Brake checking? Bad enough to be an assault? Go take an arrest warrant from the magistrate. They have to show up at a hearing for that. I should think that would get some attention.

If departments would simply fire people like this, we would have a lot fewer issues with law enforcement. That will not happen, of course. Let us know what happens.

All I can say is this fool was not GSP.......don't dial 911, dial *GSP and demand that a Trooper intervene....you have that right.
Next time this occurs call 911 and tell them theres a lunatic on the road brake checking and driving irratically. Get the GV tag number as well and report them to the sheriff.
Law enforcement officers that use their badge to be obstinate pr**ks are everywhere. They don't deserve their titles and unfortunately I know a lot of them that fall under this category.
Brake checking . . . it would be tempting to forget to hit your own brakes, since you looked down for a moment to catch your coffee cup from his last "brake check," and then accidently perform a PIT maneuver as you attempt to avoid the collision . . .

I said tempting, not that I would do it . . .

I am sorry if I over stepped any bounds here but I just emailed the SO here in Laurens County and gave the link to this thread.
there is a bunch of good guys at that department.
I believe it will be taken seriouse due to an accident that that was cause by a deputy running excesive speeds without lights or sirens resulting in the deputy getting killed if I remember correctly.

First, I second the notion that it should be taken to the respective agency with haste.

As for taking out a warrant, an identity would be needed for the application. Listing "some guy driving a blue car" wouldn't be sufficient.

I don't think "break checking" would be sufficient PC on its own for a charge of assault. All the guy would have to say is that he saw traffic ahead of him stopping so he hit his breaks or that he did so to avoid a vehicle changing lanes.

What is described would sound more like aggressive driving rather than assault. I don't know about Chatham County, but in my experience the Magistrate Court would refer a warrant application for a traffic charge to whatever court hears 40 code cases in that jurisdiction. Here it would be the Probate Court. At the old place it would have been Municipal Court.
I'd immediately call his supervisor. In fact, I'd get in front of him and dial 911 while it was happening. (Unmarked are not permitted to do traffic duty in Georgia, and would have pushed the issue.) This was definitely improper.
what's the root cause here ?
bad psychological testing ?
poor supervision ?
years of doing whatever they want and no consequences ?
I regularly see the boys in blue flying down 75N or 85N without the lights on. Sometimes they only speed until they catch up to someone going almost as fast as they are, and they'll flip on the lights and pull them over. Sometimes I guess they're just trying to make it to the donut shop before the rest of us.
I tested an idea recently because I was pretty sure the outcome would be annoying but would not cost me any money.

I learned that if you pace a certain Gwinnett Co officer going 5 over (50 in a 45) he does not like it and will pull you over and give you his opinion! There were about 20 cars behind him and I was beside him pacing him dead even. At one moment I may have nudged up a hood length. He dropped back and lit me up just as I was pulling into QT. Told me it wasn't a good idea to pass a officer that was going 5 over the limit. He even told me he had his cruise set to 50. I know he wasn't lying because I did too.
He was very friendly about the whole thing and we chatted for a bit about my truck. I got a verbal warning obviously. My daughter in the back seat asked if I was going to jail.

I don't believe he's allowed to write you a ticket for anything under 10mph. Weird story. Guy sounds like a clown.

If they are pacing you then I think they can.
I was told by a Suwanee PO a while back that Gwinnett can't do tickets for less than 10 over. I've read that and heard that many times also. I don't know how true it is.
I think it was a case of "he's got the balls (or lack of brains) to pace me?!?" He was really friendly though! And no mention of weapons came up. And neither of us shot anyone that I am aware of.

And as far as the original topic.. I took a trip to Savannah last weekend. I noticed a similar thing on I-16 once each way. And I love that couple of miles stretch of cones blocking off a lane each way with not a piece of equipment in sight.
State Police will cite for two miles over the speed limit. Everybody else may or may not grant you 10 miles per hour.

There's a stretch between Harlem and Ft. Gordon upon which officers regularly blow my doors off, even though I'm doing near 65 mph. I have no doubt but what they are doing 75-80. What can I do. I have called in the unit number, and never got a response. EMTs and Firemen are also frequent offenders. They seem to know their "brothers" won't pull them over. I reported the driver of a firetruck after he abused the use of his siren and lights to run a red light, and almost broadsided me as I had the green! The driver quickly turned off the lights after running the intersection, and resumed "normal" speed. He even stopped, behind other cars, at the next intersection.

So, how does a citizen make an arrest when they can't actually stop the idiots involved?
