Moving to Decatur

Well, I guess I just can't get enough of Atlanta. Previously lived there for a couple years in a really crummy part of town, and now my wife and I are moving to the south side of Decatur so that I can undertake my residency training. I hear Dekalb really takes their time with the CCW permitting process, so that is a bummer. Plus as a physician I can't carry at most of my work sites, so sadly I'll be unarmed much of the time (please keep working on that, GCO!). Will be looking to get hooked in with some IDPA or GADPA people and maybe even some preparedness folks.

The place we've picked to live is tucked away in the back of a very nice little subdivision. Our neighborhood does have a very active neighborhood watch, and a real sense of community, so we hope to take advantage of some of the security that that will provide.

But it is a pretty small bubble with not-so-nice areas all sides, so I'm probably going to go ahead and get the wife her own AR-15 and Glock 19 to match mine, and she's agreed to get some training and her own concealed carry permit. We've been working a little bit each night on having her learn to rack the slide on a semiauto, and the fundamentals of gun safety and marksmanship. She's even coming to an IDPA match with me this weekend to learn a little bit about that game. She'll be working from home, which makes me feel a little bit better about her safety, and in addition to our electronic security system, we've recently acquired a 4-legged alarm system. So we're taking baby steps towards having a really secure home. Would love any suggestions for home security stuff, as well as any favorite ranges, gun shops, or IDPA clubs in and around Decatur.

Welcome to my neck of the woods. Good ranges are Stoddard's by Atlantic Station and Quickshot by Emory. If you are looking for outdoor ranges, Charlie Elliot WMA way down I-20E is your closest option. If you want to grab a coffee or beer, let me know; I'm about a mile from Oakhurst.
Are your work sites off limits under state law? If not, then you can legally carry concealed.

Your only risk would then be job termination if caught. But if learning how to conceal without getting caught is worth the benefit of not getting hurt or killed by a criminal or crazy, there you go.

I will definitely hit you up once we get moved in May!

For me, state law vs employer rules is kind of a moot point. At my current stage in my career, getting fired would be a career-ending event and I have come too far and have too much on the line to risk it. I will be playing by the rules.
Im right down the road. Be careful in decatur. If someone sees an evil gun over there they may have a heartattack on the spot.

I've never had a problem with one in Decatur or in Midtown.

Also id like to add ga range and gun up 85 to that list. Thats my preferred range.
Likewise in the area. Give a shout when y'all make the move. If at all possible, we need you and your wife to make friends with your new state rep/senator. There are now two Democrats that vote yes on gun bills even though party leadership opposes. Just a few more pebbles and the avalanche is hard to ignore.

You'll find far more armed folks in the area than you'd imagine. The rumors are unfounded. ;)
