How about we just get rid of all grades and go straight to handing out diplomas.
Participate in class 10% of the time. Do your own thing 90% of the time during school, and be seen as special, unique, and creative.
An educational system that would penalize such a free-spirit via grades, especially if they used their time for "community organizing" would be evil. /sarcasm
Although there likely ought to be a waiting period, it would still leave tuition too expensive.
Maybe some State mandated training in order to qualify to receive the diploma after paying the non-refundable tuition?
Naturally there will need to be background checks and "show good cause" for needing a diploma beyond those faced by the public at large.
Diploma Free Zones?
Grade Free Zones? ... 'Cause you know, we can't have drunken students with under-developed brains stressing out in an environment where they need to learn and discuss controversial topics and get themselves expanded. Everybody says how stressful these academic environments already are anyway. Could we at least prohibit grades in day cares and if there is a high school student nearby?
