To all of you technically minded out there. The hard drive on my Gateway laptop is crapping out. Are there any good on-line sources out there for a new hard drive? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Yes. Newegg.com is probably your best bet. Start here: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory ... ard-Drives
If your laptop is new-ish and mid- to high-end, you'll probably need a SATA drive. If not, you'll probably need an IDE drive. Check your manual or the gateway support site.

newegg.com is a good online source. Buyer feedback to help you decide, and normally has decent prices. There may be others cheaper, but they are a good starting place. Tigerdirect.com is another place to look.

Yes its only a year old and is SATA drive. I should have read a few more reviews before making the leap. Thanks, Budder for your quick response!

If you do not need a huge HDD, consider an SSD in the 60GB range, unless you want to spend over $200 for something larger. They do not draw near as much power as a traditional HDD and read/write times are faster**.

** Some SSD drives have much slower write speeds compared their read speeds. Check the specs and make sure you get something that is fast BOTH directions.

If it's only a year old the drive should still be under warranty. Pop the drive out and contact the manufacturer (of the drive).

+1 on warranty - the OEM website has a place where you can enter the serial # of the drive to check on warranty status.

+1 on newegg.com if the above is no joy
