Chicago newspaper is referencing goings-on in Lawrence, MA.

Headline is "WRITTEN AUTHORITY TO WALK IN YOUR OWN TOWN" with caption of "Men Being Stopped by Militiamen at Lawrence, Mass., and Forced to Show Passes Allowing Them to Walk Down a Public Sidewalk."

Note that the associated article says that this is "nothing unusual," that "in nearly every state in the union, the same thing has happened."

Article about the Times bombing is here.

I read a book a couple years ago called destiny's gentleman. The book is about a railroad baron from pa that became a politician.

Anyways he was in Chicago during the great fire and talked about how he was barely able to escape the city because of all the press gangs forcing people into service.

Funny when chicago talks about anyone's morals...

I was born and raised in Lawrence but a tad later than that article!

Both sets of grandparent immigrated from Sicily around 1910. They, along with many Poles and Irish, worked in the ever present mills in MA. The scenario described above is something I never heard about though. Interesting.

Lawrence, Mass. was the scene of serious drama and violence during that time, in 1912.

I can see the government calling out the militia to maintain order, and even to implement new and TEMPORARY travel restrictions about showing I.D. or having a good reason to walk in the vicinity of violent, deadly, union / socialists vs. industrialists clashes.

Private militias, hired thugs and goon squads serving only one side in such a struggle, should be banned from public gatherings also. Let them stay strictly on the private property of those they are aligned with.

Nearly two centuries after the mills first rose, the old buildings that once housed deplorable working conditions for the woolen industry and later far better conditions for the electronics industry (my parents worked in both at various times), have been repurposed into fancy apartments/condos and shopping venues for Lawrence's current generation of progressives and millennials who think it's cool to live and work in the heart of an old mill city.

My entire extended family is still in the general area. I and one of my uncles were the only ones that ever moved away.

Have you ever tried to educate them on guns? Do they support bans or limits on personal ownership or no limits-- in general.

I forgot to mention that Lawrence joined the ranks of "sanctuary cities" a couple of years ago. One of only six in MA. It was always a hub for various illicit activities but now it's even in Trump's crosshairs for drugs! The Puerto Rican/latino subculture has turned it from a relatively nice multi-ethnic community into a real shithole.

My two older cousins used to take me shooting at a local garbage dump decades ago. Many a rat fell to my trusty .22! That progressed into black bear hunts in NH and ME. We'd probably call them Fudds because they're strictly bolt guners and shotguners but they support everything and are pissed at the sh*t MA AG Healy has been pulling these past few years over "assault weapons." The rest of the family is neutral on guns as far as I know.

Then you have the duty to educate and inform.
