Forgive me if this is an absurd question, but is there any way a mental health check would turn up a disqualification that NICS would not?

In other words, because NICS includes mental health data would the mental health check a probate court would provide any more detailed information?

I don't know if every county does a mental health check, what exactly is checked if they do, or if they only do so if you indicate that you were ordered into some form of inpatient program.

That said I've heard conflicting info here and elsewhere about the law.

One version is that the judge may use ANY inpatient record regardless of how many years have passed (5 years) and exercise their discretion as to whether or not you should be issued a GWL.

The other version is that the judge may issue a waiver asking an administrator (at a hospital) about the terms of your treatment or observation or evaluation for a recommendation IF AND ONLY IF it was under 5 years
