While he may be legally prevented from possessing them, I see no reason why he should not be allowed to dispose of them. What is the difference between him and any other felon, who at the moment of conviction, has some guns at home? Obviously, he must make some arrangements to dispose of them. It seems to me that (the police) keeping his guns is a Fifth Amendment problem.
