Unless I missed it, this hypervelocity round has no maneuvering capabilities. It's just a very fast dumb projectile. So unless these Chinese (and Russian also) hypervelocity cruise missiles stay on a single path to their target - which is highly unlikely - this is just a lucky shot at best.

But it does put the Chinese on warning that we have the technology. Now we need to do something really neat with it to show them up.

Why do you keep wanting to blow things up? Past memories or future practice?

Portland works for me. Rochester or Minneapolis works too. I expect ammo is a bit expensive so target selection is important.

“Fast-moving” and “cruise missile” are contradictions. Certainly a cool retrofit but more likely useful for anti-drone actions.

Tomahawk cruise missles run about mach 0.74 as standard cruise speed. That converts to right at 567 mph.

    I call that fast.

That is fast, but Mach .74 is still quite a bit slower than the Mach 5 mentioned in the article.

Russia claims its Zircon hypersonic cruise missile flies at Mach 7 or better. That sounds pretty frisky to me.

In military aviation terms, that’s a lazy meander. ICBMs run Mach 20. Mach 5 projectiles shooting at a 560 mph flying object has a similar outlook to me attempting to dodge the output of a camp carbine in a small gym.

That’s why I suspect anti-drone use is the goal but saying anti-cruise missile gets better PR.

OK but even drones have maneuverability so this fancy ass "bullet" better grow some directional capabilities in case the Army wants to use it in unstaged conditions.

Waterfowl have incredible maneuverability too but still get taken by smaller non-steerable shot. The velocity ratio is a good comparison here even though waterfowl have proportionally smaller turning radii than drones or cruise missiles.
