No, they are really really anti-gun, and proud of it. They've been the host of an entrenched and corrupt democratic party ruled government for decades. The economy is stagnant and the politicians haven't done a thing about it but pass more and more restictive laws in regards to personal freedoms. They also b!#[email protected] and moan about the military bases there. If they were to close up though the place would sink into the ocean post haste.
When I was stationed there in the early 90s they had a growing gang problem on Oahu. The outer islands were much more rural and laid back once you got away from the mega resorts.
