Parkway Murder Anniversary

This month, on the one year anniversary of murder on the Blue Ridge
Parkway, rangers say it is safe to enjoy the scenery.

Authorities say William Ashby shot and killed Elizabeth Hafter, a 22
year old UVA student early last October. He took her car and fled.
There were never any charges against Ashby, as he died in a Florida
shootout while he was still a suspect.

Now, at the scene of the crime, hikers were surprised to hear the
story. They say they feel safe on the trails.

Hiker Dennis Titus stated, "I just can't imagine that happening here,
you know tourists, and such a pretty area, I don't know why anyone
would want to kill someone here."

Another hiker, John Donahue, said, "That wouldn't worry me any,
that's just an unusual happening on the trail, I wouldn't worry about
getting murdered on the trail."

Rangers say when hitting the trails it is important to remember to
stay in groups and on marked paths.

Why? Criminals won't kill you on a marked path? :?

They will, but people will find your body faster. You have no idea how hard it is to reconstruct badly decomposing bodies for the funeral!

National Forests are not Off Limits by federal law.

Can you ellaborate on that please. I go hiking in the Chattahoochee National forest and I was told that I can not carrylike that's going to stop me... I'm going to plan a trip to hike the AT soon

I do not mean to be a smart aleck, but I am not sure how else to answer your question. What does someone telling you something have to do with federal law?

The A.T. itself probably goes through some places that are off limits. State Parks, WMAs, &c. If you are going all the way to the end, you might even go through some states where your firearms license is not valid at all.

But there is no federal law placing National Forests off limits. There is a law, well, a regulation, placing National Parks off limits. That is what the rulemaking petition to the DOI was all about, and that is what this federal bill is just about.

Right now it's just a bill, its only a bill, and its sitting there on Capitol Hill . . .

Thank you for the reply, I thought maybe you were looking at a Federal code saying firearms are not off limits. WMAs are going to be my biggest isue. I waas mostly curious anyways...
