Yes, our friend Frank Gadbois sent in another jewel for the Letters to the Editor section in today's Macon Telegraph. Here it is:

Guns cause crime
Since my arrival in Middle Georgia a decade ago from England where gun control is active and effective, I have been continuously amazed and frightened at the large number of armed robberies and homicides. Only 500 British citizens die due to the misuse of guns annually versus 30,000 here. Citizens of European nations have fewer guns and fewer crimes. No wonder I felt safer in jolly old England and while traveling in Europe.
In Friday's Viewpoints two contributors discussed the mayor's decision to wisely have the 350-plus guns confiscated by Macon's finest destroyed. The contributors want these guns sold for some miniscule amount of money that will have no meaningful effect on the city's finances. Literally a drop in the bucket.
I agree with Mayor Jack Ellis that these guns should be cut up and melted down. Macon doesn't need more guns in the hands of its citizens. Many of these guns could be stolen and used by the bad guys again. This is not uncommon. Vital background checks on potential gun purchasers don't work when guns are stolen or traded on the black market. Yes, guns cause crime! Just read The Telegraph and watch the local news.

So I quickly wrote up my retort and emailed it in.
Hopefully they'll print it in the next few days:
I’m glad Mr. Gadbois felt safe during his visit to the U.K.
(Viewpoints, 7 March) but he must have confined his treks to the
rural areas. According to the British government, the violent crime
rate in the London area is 3,400 per 100,000 (Chapter 7, Table 7a of
the 2005/06 British Crime Survey). The violent crime rate in
Washington, D.C., one of our most crime-ridden cities (and let’s not
forget a city with extreme gun restrictions), is 1,459 per 100,000
(U.S. Census, 2005). Yes, London has more than twice the violent
crime of our own crime capital. If guns are the cause of crime as
Mr. Gadbois states, London and Washington D.C. should be utopias, not
the dangerous places they clearly are. Unfortunately, that’s what
you reap when you deny the inalienable right of people to protect
themselves. Rest assured the Brits are working on it though, what
with banning toy guns, kitchen knives, and Samurai swords. What’s
next to go Frank, cricket bats?
Guns don’t cause crime Frank, people cause crime. It’s irresponsible
to blame inanimate objects for the evil acts of some human beings.
However, in the spirit of fair play, I’ve decided to test your theory
by keeping an eye on my Taurus MP145. I’ve always wondered what it
does when I’m not watching it. It hasn’t made any moves…yet. But my
old Beretta 92, on the other hand, has this evil look about it. I
think it’s plotting something.
