'Gun-Free School Zones' Blamed for Tragedy

( - The violence at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, Colo., demonstrates the fallacy and false sense of security created by "gun free school zone" laws, a Second Amendment group says.

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) says it is time to reassess such laws. "All they have done is create target-rich, no-risk environments for monsters who have no fear of encountering an armed teacher or administrator, or a legally-armed private citizen who might happen to be in the building, said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb.

"This sort of thing didn't happen before the advent of gun-free school zone laws," Gottlieb said. "You never saw such an outrage in the days when high schools typically had rifle teams, and -- particularly in the West -- where it was common in the fall to find both teachers and students with hunting rifles or shotguns locked in their cars.

16-year-old Emily Keyes was shot and killed by an armed transient, who wandered into the building unchallenged and held six female students hostage in their English class, eventually releasing all but two.

Press reports said 53-year-old Duane Morrison sexually abused some of the girls. Morrison had no ties to the area and had been living out of his jeep, possibly camping in Bailey. He killed Keyes and then himself when a SWAT team moved in.

A gun control group issued a statement on Wednesday, saying Americans must "redouble our efforts to take all necessary steps to make our schools safer for our children. This is a responsibility we all share," said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

But CCRKBA said laws creating gun-free school zones have "disarmed the wrong people and left our schools, and the children inside, vulnerable to this kind of atrocity."
