Maybe he thought that finding your stolen car at some point after it was stolen, away from the scene of the theft, meant it was still a "felony in progress"

and he must've thought that state law gave him permission to use deadly force to stop a nonviolent property crime felony in progress.

( Very few states have such a legal doctrine.)

Every time someone tells me castle doctrine applies to vehicles I have to explain that likely doesn’t work the way they think it does…
