GFL no longer accepted for NICS background check!

I just got back for a small pawn shop in Cobb county. I picked up a used Ruger and presented my Driver's License and GFL. The owner offered me a cash discount so I went over to the bank and picked up some funds and when I returned I was told that they just had to run a background check.

I told them it wasn't necessary because ATF had approved the GFL as a substitute again. They told me they just got off the phone with ATF and my GFL was not going to be accepted. The problem is apparently that my GFL is nearly 5 years old and I have moved (several times) since it was issued. Since the address on my Driver's license and my GFL didn't match it was not valid any more as a NICS substitute.

I ended up waiting the five minutes for the instant check and leaving. I won't post the name of the shop because they did not honor the price we agreed on when i went to the bank. (They said that the price they quoted me didn't include tax, except for the fact before I left to get the money they said it would be $XX out the door  ). I'm not going to slander their store here, it's not necessary, so I won't give out the name.

I asked them who they talked to at ATF and who said my GFL was no good and they gave me the name of the agent who told them that. Just wondering what you guys thought. I bet Malum will get pretty intrigued by all this. :D

That's a load of crap.

My GFL and DL's address don't match (they will tomorrow, when I pick up a new DL, but they don't right now) and I didn't have a bit of a problem when I bought my Mosin.
When I bought my AK, they did checks no matter what license you had or what address was where...it was store policy, but I wanted an AK damnit.
Oh, I've bought at least 9 guns from dealers with my permit in that condition and never had an issue until today.

What store doesn't honor the permit besides the one in my original post? (Who'd you get your AK from?)

Call 'em out.

We don't need bad behavior like that from gun stores in this state. There are too many good ones who support the law that we, as proactive gun owners, can support instead of the bad ones.
Last time I bought a gun they wouldn't sell it to me until I updated my drivers license since I told them I recently moved. My GFL didn't match, of course.

Shady.

BTW, if you are close to 5 years you should start the renewal process now. Could take 6-12 months.
Last time I bought a gun was April.

My DL and GFL not matching was not an issue. That dealer is full of it.

Place in FL. It didn't have anything to do with being out of state. Someone was buying a pistol when I bought the AK. Told them the same thing.

Same.

This whole issue is state specific to Georgia, as the GFL is supposed to supplant the background check.

Ah, gotcha... according to http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/bradylaw/permit_chart.htm, FL doesn't do that anyways... I wonder if I'd be exempt with a GFL if I tried to by in, say, NC, or another reciprocal state?
Hey, they updated the chart!

What do you know, they did exactly like I said they would...
Georgia - Concealed weapons permit qualifies. (Note: Temporary renewal permits/licenses do not qualify.)
Now lets see the probate courts try and say a temporary renewal permit no longer exists (because just quoting GA law was not enough).

I agree. Or you could think of it like this... Post the name of the shop so we know where NOT to go to get shafted. Do it for our children!
I can only look at that chart for so long because the name Brady is on it...

There's the problem - you took your GFL in instead of your concealed weapons permit.

DKing, Print that out and go paste it to the guy's forehead (or at least to the counter in front of him).

You might also print out the letter to FFLs.
If a store chooses to do a background check, it is of course free to do so. Likewise, you are free to choose to shop at a store that doesn't pull such shenanigans.
