OK lot going on here. The alert doesn't point it out but the police shot and killed a person I imagine during this event. The GBI is investigating as they always do (see post 6) when a LE shoots someone dead.

It's an Evolution in Student Housing in Statesboro

Welcome to Campus Evolution Villages student apartments in Statesboro, your new home away from home right across the street from Georgia Southern University. Campus Evolution Villages is the best off-campus student housing close to Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
I posted this in Gun Free Zone as the map shows this On-Campus, although it does say "across the street from" campus. Move if think best.

The shooting happened around 1:08 a.m. on Tuesday. Statesboro authorities said officers with the Statesboro Police Department responded to 1699 Statesboro Place Circle, regarding an armed robbery/home invasion. Police said, three suspects entered a house and held the victims at gunpoint.

Officers arrested one of the suspects near the scene. A second suspect was found but ran from the area. Police used a taser in an attempt to arrest that person, but was unsuccessful.

An officer eventually found the second suspect behind a nearby house. Police said the suspect had a gun and shots were fired during the encounter. The suspect was shot and killed, according to police.

GBI investigators still on the scene of a fatal officer involved shooting in Statesboro. I talked to a Georgia Southern student who tells me she heard gunshots and witnessed the entire incident from her apartment. I'll have her story tonight on WJCL News
Ugh. I really hope we're not about to wind up with another Charlotte or Furgeson here. Guess I need to carry a couple of extra mags for the next few nights.
The GBI is investigating as they always do when a LE shoots someone dead.
Wrong.

There is absolutely, positively no statute in the state of GA that requires that the GBI handle officer involved shootings. Agencies don't even have to notify the GBI of an officer involved shooting. The GBI can't even investigate a local case unless requested to do so by a person statutorily authorized to make the request.

I can show you lots and lots of cases of officer involved shootings in which the GBI did not investigate.

The GBI must be notified per state law of an in custody death such as a death in jail, but again, there is absolutely, positively no statute in the state of GA that requires that the GBI handle officer involved shootings.
OK noted. Can you point to one where an agency decided not to have the GBI investigate? Just curious.

An officer reported that the second suspect was in possession of a firearm. After an unsuccessful attempt of arrest through use of a taser, shots were fired and the suspect suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
The third suspect is currently being searched for by the Statesboro Police Department.

Our shooting in 2011 is one.

DeKalb Police has dozens as their IA worked their cases until a recent administrative change.
Perp offed himself. The cop heard the shot in the dark and returned fire. He missed entirely.

I am not 100% positive, but I do not recall GBI being involved in shootings at my old department.

Students, faculty and staff at Georgia Southern University did not receive an Eagle Alert after the armed robbery, home invasion and fatal shooting of a suspect that occurred at the Campus Evolution Apartments early Tuesday.
According to the 2016 Annual Security Report from the GS Division of Public Safety, the University is to release an Eagle Alert if an incident meets all of the following criteria:
A crime is committed.
The perpetrator has not been apprehended.
There is substantial risk to physical safety of other members of the campus community because of this crime.
In the event of an off-campus crime, the security report says that GS may release an Eagle Alert if the crime occurred in a location used and frequented by the University population.
Similarly, no Eagle Alert was sent during an armed robbery and an assault against a police officer near Chandler Road on Sept. 19, 2016. The University had released the following statement afterward:
"The presiding law enforcement officials deemed there was no continuing palpable threat to students or employees of Georgia Southern University. Georgia Southern University has historically been proactive and over communicated with students, parents, faculty, and staff and in this case we failed to do so. University officials met this morning and will reconvene a discussion on when the Eagle Alert system is used. Georgia Southern University is committed to providing a safe environment on and around the University campus."
