at least they have been in the M16 game for a looooooong time... mid/late 70's I think. A lot of companies have popped up in the last 10-15 years due to the AR's popularity in the States but dont have a long history of building these components and also making rifles.
They have been govt suppliers for a long time and hire military veterans.
A good buddy of mine who was an armorer in the forces (and a private builder after the service) told me he only swears by DPMS stuff.... other than the occasional target barrel (Douglas, etc).
If you're looking to buy a whole AR.... DPMS is a great option.
Looking for just an upper/lower to start with.... another great option.
when i shot my buddies DPMS 24" heavy bbl'd AR.... yes, tack driver!
