What if his trajectory and glide ratio was not what he expected? He would not realize he was too low until about half a second before he went SPLAT on the rocks.

Falling next to the cliffs, that's cool, and seems safe enough. Whether he falls faster or slower than he expected, he's got plenty of air underneath him.
