The nation was in shock on 9-11-01.

The nation was angry and wanted vengance against the terrorists and their supporters on Sept. 12th.

So, who were the terrorists, and what was their motive for attacking us, in NYC and DC?

Well, some of the "martyrs for Allah" on those planes left suicide videos behind, telling their motives.

Osama Bin Laden himself both talked about his motives on several occasions, and even wrote a long and detailed open letter to the world about it in December of 2001- basically his version of the Declaration of Independence, announcing his grievances with America and explaining why this extreme step was, in his view, necessary for his just cause.

Yesterday's 20th anniversary speeches about 9/11 featured a bunch of politicians bending over backward to say that Islam is a religion of peace and we should celebrate the diversity muslims bring to the USA, and that Americans did not blame that religion for the terrorist attacks. Well, that kind of polititcal correctness denies the connection between international terrorism and fundamentalist Islam, which is particularly obvious in the case of 9/11.

Check out what the now-dead terrorists themselves say was their motivation, and judge whether or not their religion is just an irrelevant detail and coincidental circumstance.

Saying terrorists are representative of Islam is like saying those of Westboro Baptist are representative of Christendom. I have no problem with my faith being differentiated accordingly.

West Point has a huge amount of material on the subject; there's little need for conjecture.

"Takfiri salafist insurgents" is the not-especially-helpful answer.

Most of this isn't really about Islam; it goes much, much deeper... Islam is just kind of a veneer over what are really tribal arguments. The USA got involved (as we so often do) with one set of tribes (like the al Mukrin clan, controlled by the House of Saud)n and so therefore got entangled in a nearly incomprehensible tribal power play which has little respect for internationally-recognized nation states.
