And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs -- politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre.
The same happened after the VT shootings.

You can't stop someone that is willing to die from causing damage or killing you without fail.

That was beaten into my head when we got briefed about how to avoid kidnappings and terrorism. In JAPAN. In the 80s. Every foreign country, you get the same brief. The Marines at the gate are just expected to hit an alarm before they go up in smoke, and hopefully send some lead downrange (although in most foreign countries they couldn't have more than a sidearm).

Death is a certainty. Get a helmet. Lucky for most of us (current) civilians, criminals are typically complete pussies once they no longer have the discernable edge.
