Homeowner Shoots Burglar

August 22, 2007

According to police, a morning shooting in Columbus was a case of self defense.

Around 9:30 Wednesday morning police say a man armed with a gun entered a home on Patch drive.

Authorities say the homeowner pulled his own gun to defend himself. Sergeant Harvey Hatcher with the Columbus Police Department tells News Three this was a clear case of self defense. Hatcher says "right now the preliminary investigation shows the homeowner who lives here was confronted by a subject with a gun. The homeowner was able to retrieve his own weapon and fired shots at the suspect". Hatcher says the attacker was shot in the arm and was taken to The hospital. After the shooting the culprit ran one block away to Eddy street where he was taken into custody.

The case is being handled as an attempted burglary. The homeowner was not charged.

More detailed account from the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer on August 24, 2007:

A Columbus teenager faces attempted robbery charges as he recovers in the hospital from a gunshot wound.

[name omitted], 19, is charged with burglary, aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, said Columbus Police Lt. Mark D. Starling.

The charges stem from a 9:40 a.m. Wednesday encounter on Patch Drive, where police said BG approached a 52-year-old [name omitted] as he was unloading his car.

BG is accused of pointing a gun at [intended victim] and demanding money, police said.

"Mr. F knocked the gun away from his direction and ran into his house," Starling said, "He got his own weapon."

BG followed into his home, Starling said.

"He told (name omitted) he wasn't afraid to die. He pointed his weapon at Mr. F, at which point Mr. F shot him."

Police found BG at an Eddy Drive address, and he was taken to the Medical Center and treated for a gunshot wound to the arm. Starling said the teenager would be taken to the Muscogee County Jail after his release from the hospital.

Mr. F will not be charged.

I'm burdened with an acute sense of discretion. BG is innocent until proven guilty, and Mr. F is a private citizen. I hesitate to put their names on the internet for the same reason I don't use my own.
