Columbia county time to process is 30 days unless there is a history received with your fingerprint card. You must then see the probate judge and she makes the final determination, based on history. From what I saw this morning, if you have been guilty of any domestic violence charge, you can pretty much forget a GFL. I am sure there are other offenses that would cause the judge to disqualify one, but I happend to overhear one fellow that was denied on the domestic violence charge, even tho he'd been to anger management class and was no longer on probation.

My permit was issued this morning. Hooray......

wa4phy, your post leads me to believe the judge held public "hearings" of some sort. Is this the case, and, if so, can you elaborate on what they were like, who attended, etc.?

JRM, the judge was behind their counter (glass covered) but she took the other gentlemen to a waiting room which was within earshot of me standing at the counter. Not really a public hearing but it would have been better for the guy if she had either closed the door, or taken him to her office. I suspect she was in a hurry, as she just had come in and had been in the office for about 3 minutes when she called me to the counter.

wa4phy, that was a terribly fast turnaround time on your GFL. A friend and I submitted our apps on March 27, 2006 and both of us are still waiting, roughly 73 days. I have called Probate Court to inquire about the status of GFL and got the standard line... didn't push the issue any further at the time. but, she did tell me it would take 14-16 weeks.

I think I filed on the 18 of April, if my memory serves correctly. The girl at the window told me then, it would take 30 days. You did get printed via that livescan machine in the office didn't you? Maybe something has changed since I went in, but can't say for sure.

yeh, I was scanned. I assume from your post you were a first time applicant and not a renewal. a renewal in columbia county only takes thirty days

Yes, it was my first time. I'm wondering now, why, when you applied prior to me, I got mine first. Naaahhh.. it couldn't be because the people out there are biased towards us old folks by any chance... I am considered an old fart by many, and in the senior age category. Maybe they thought I was harmless

I am not sure what the holdup is. do you have any contacts or friends in the probate court that helped you out.

I didn't have, nor do I have any contact or string-puller in the probate system. The only person I have that is even related to the county is a female captain friend in the Sheriff's department, and I know she did not do anything, even tho their department does process the requests for background. I called the office about 2 weeks prior to getting mine, and the girl I talked to said she had mailed out over 100 letters the previous week, and if I had not got one, then my stuff had not returned. I'm just wondering really, if there has been wholesale change in the probate system on issuance of permits. Seems enough people are having to wait a long time, but still, me getting mine in 30 days is good. There could be some bias, or plain out discrimination, but we'll never find it out. Out of curiosity, are you between 40 and 60 years old? Maybe if we had enough people that were issued based on age, it would show up as discrimination or bias. I just dunno...

hey Sam, i'm 39, but i don't think there is an age biase, hope not. the thing that gets me is i am employeed, on a volunteer basis at the Sheriffs office and the girl doing the app knew it. my backgroung check on the local level was completed while i was there, I actually helped deputy Magahee run it. I even called a friend in admin services at the GBI and he said he would get it pushed through. as far as i know, i am only waiting on the FBI check. I may give it a few more weeks and then call Judge Hardaway and see what she says.

Have not been here in a good while, but was searching for some stuff, and happened to reread my own posts and got to thinking. Perhaps my previous employment with the Govt and previous background checks made some difference (I know I was cleared by NCIC and NIS due to security clearances and maybe even a dossier with FBI). Guess with all that is going on, I need to get back up to speed with current events. In any event, buddy of mine just yesterday gave me his tale of problems with Columbia County not long after my short lived experience.

I applied Feb 13th so that's something like 37 days.

I too have had previous clearances.

Well I am 21 and I purchased my first handgun. I am thinking of applying for my carry permit. I am wondering if like you guys say there might be age discrimination if I have a chance at getting mine. FYI I have a clean record well except for one speeding ticket when I was 16. Think I have a chance?

You're good. I got mine 8 months after I turned 21 (was out of state) and had two traffic violations

Thanks for the vote of confidence. My dad said he wasn't sure because he is an optometrist and checks the eyes of some of the judges and they are older and he said they can be age biased in their thinking. But I don't know about the probate court judge. Thanks guys

I finally came home for the holidays and got around to applying for my GFL. Did it an paid my money the lady in the probate office was really nice. You guys said they did your finger print with an electronic scanner they did mine the old fashion way... ink on paper. The lady told me to expect four to six weeks. Keep your fingers crossed

Finally got it!!! Got the letter the other day and went today and picked up my GFL. It took 45 days so it wasn't as bad as some guys out there.
