So who believes in a club or bat as a less-lethal (and more child-safe) alternative to a gun for some households?

I think a youth-sized baseball bat is a force to be rekoned with.
Although I would prefer them to be heavier than they usually are.

Get a hickory bat instead of aluminum. Then, wrap it with barbed wire.

    Heavy negatively effects bat speed.

And speed is a greater factor in kinetic energy than weight

    KE = 1/2 x M x V^2

I think a post hole digger handle is decent. Around an inch diameter at the handle square profile after that solid hickory cut it down to about 2-3 feet long. I would not want to be hit with one.

My 'walking stick' is a 20-year old, well seasoned length of Japanese hard wood in the shape of a katana. I have confidence that it will shatter a kneecap, elbow, or wrist should it need to be employed for defense.

When I was a kid, we always had a baseball bat behind the door. Sometimes we even used it to play baseball.

I like having a couple canes around. You can carry those anywhere, even into restricted and high security areas.

A club does not by any means need to be heavy to ruin someone's world with, as anybody who has had training with the Tonfa or PR-24, for example, knows very well. Witness eskrima/kali, for example:

https://youtu.be/eFwbeV02x30?t=21 (this video is debunking ninja dude's poor instruction and fallacious assertions by way of demonstration)

    Some sauce:

    [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPlFPwFPrwY[/ame] (Elllliotttt ouuuuuuuuuuuch)

    https://youtu.be/ZHvvEKpkLw4?t=37

    https://youtu.be/TtS3Ni-NfIs?t=138

I'm still amazed to this day that I somehow managed to not wind up with any broken fingers, wrists, nose, or worse injuries from years of short-stick training (initially with friends, then in Hapkido, and later in Shaolin-do), especially since when I first started, we didn't use pads - instead, I broke my wrist years later by hanging too tightly onto a banister railing when I went head-over-heels down a flight of stairs... (for those that skipped the last link, see this for what I mean)

Suffice to say, you really can easily beat someone senseless with even a short, light-weight stick. Or[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Svfd29ZuEeg"] a rolled-up newspaper[/ame] (this video remains one of my favorite things ever), for that matter. There's a good reason those people in that first video are wearing so much gear... and a reason why in my martial arts training I avoided the 3-section-staff just as studiously as I did the [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whuBjeGxQig"]chain whip[/ame]: because my skull already has enough dents in it.

That's why my skinny, 6'1", 160lb. self has no problem ringing the bell on those "Strong Man" things at carnivals and fairs: not because I have a great deal of strength to swing a heavy hammer/mallet, but because I know HOW to swing one properly to achieve the necessary speed and acceleration with the right technique.

I routinely use a 5 foot hiking/walking stick. I was told I could not bring it past security at the Hoover dam and they wanted to know why I carried it. I offered to show them the scars and they said yes and seemed to laugh like they had got me. Made sure I did clean boxers that morning because I had been told it would likely happen. I dropped trou and called them out on it. They let me go with my walking stick.

Makes a pretty good self defense weapon too. Took a few quarterstaff classes way back. Remember a little but dayum little. Need to find one again.

    What, a newspaper you mean?

Good question, I haven't seen one in ages, personally.

I can think of much better things to do with the product of dead trees - such as targets - than print the drivel they do in newspapers. If I absolutely have to read said drivel, it might as well at least be online, where it doesn't require cutting down, transporting, processing, packaging, re-transporting, printing, and transporting again, just to get their pablum in front of my eyes.
