Police shoot dog during backyard chase

A Garfield Heights police officer shot a chained-up watchdog that lunged at him as he chased a group of kids through backyards, a police spokesman said.

Police responded to a call to Turney and McCracken roads around 6:30 p.m. today for a complaint about a group of kids throwing water balloons at cars.

When police arrived, the kids ran and the officer chased them.

In one yard, a large watchdog, chained to a back porch, lunged at the officer. The officer shot the dog.

The dog survived and was taken to a pet hospital for treatment.

The officer, who police did not identify, was not hurt.

    The police investigation is continuing.

SOB runs across MY property & shoots MY dog!
Oh hell, he better hope I'm not at home and he d*mn well better be glad the dog ended up ok.
#1 My wife & children (if there ever are any)
    #2 Me
    #3 my dog
    #4 my stuff

screw with any of the above & the repercussions go something like
#1 shoot to kill, don't ever both with questions
#2 shoot first if, you live we might get around to questions
#3 shoot to maim, beat the hell out of you while your down, let the dog chew on ya a bit and then ask questions.
    #4 question then shoot.

There is a reason that you DO NOT F WITH A MAN'S FAMILY OR DOG.

    This is pathetic.

What if he missed the dog and the bullet hit someone in the house?
Sorry, it was investigated and deemed an accidental discharge!!!!
    Sarcasom off!!!
I agree with Tinker on this one.

    I couldn't agree more!

Shoot my dog, or especially my family, and I will shoot your ass!

Shoot it until you are dead... or wishing you were!

    That's not a threat; that's a promise.

It may take a while and I may well end up in prison, but you can be damned certain it's gonna happen!

I have only threatened bodily harm to others a couple of times in my life, but I musta sounded convincing, because the problems went away.

Immediately! DO NOT MESS WITH MY KIDS!

    Had that been my dog...

1.) it would not have been chained up.

2.) that cop best be watching his back...

    depends

    idk

officer may have been within reach of dog and feared for his safety it may be just an unfortunate incident

if he was tired, pissed and just shot the dog without reason then he should be kicked off the force and proscecuted

More details would be nice. Like how old were the kids? I am assuming for an office to have to engage in a foot race they have to be in the teens.

Shooting a chained dog in a foot chase for kids throwing water ballons? I am not sure about all of that. Even if it lunged and even if he was tired and out of breath, they are trained I would think to make those kids of decisions in the moment. The decision to see if the dog is really a threat. But he may have turned a corner and bam!! There is a gaurd dog jumping at him.

Watch now we are gonna hear it was a beagle on a chain!

I feel for the dog. Doesnt even say if he caught the kids! What a mess once again.

Don't come onto my property and start shooting unless you want the favor returned.

I'm surprised that everyone seems to be missing the obvious question: Why were the police called in the first place? I would think that in any large metro region, particularly in a high crime district (just Googled -- this wasn't in one of those) a call of children throwing water balloons shouldn't be considered a breach of peace but rather progress. :)

    Really!

Any day you aren't seeing "children" popping a cap into someone and flashing a gang symbol should be considered a pretty good day.

Well, in the second case, they were not called at all. The cop just did not like the dog because it barked at his wife, so he went out to get it the next day.

I am a dog lover too, but going to prison? I don't know about that. I have seen several shows lately about prison life on A&E. You walk in. One of the gangs don't like you. You are now on a hit list. You are now headed to the cemetary within 48 hours. Nothing you can do about it.

Then don't shoot the dog unless it is attacking you.

Bingo....what did that old cop show used to say?

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time?

    Re: depends

Firing around civilians intentionally is never an unfortunate accident.

If he shot my dog because he is tired and pissed, he would have a lot more to worry about then being fired and prosecuted.
