As I watch 2010 roll out (good riddance IMHO) and await 2011 here in Grant Park I wonder how others on this board fare on NYE in regards to "celebratory gunfire." Here in GP and the surrounding areas, between 11pm and 2am it's like Sarajevo. Neighbors routinely speak of picking bullets out of their roofs and the need to stay indoors due to the danger. I've already heard multiple 5, 6, 15, 30 round bursts.

Do you engage, shooting into the air?

Do your neighbors (in the air or otherwise?)

    How bad does it get?

I'm thinking of recording it tonight, it's really something to hear.

I would never, it's a moronic act AFAIC, at least in the city where it's illegal outright, what are your thoughts?

    Also, Happy New Year!

In the words of Hall and Oates - "I can't go for that".

Where are you from, do you hear a good deal of it or just fireworks?

Shooting started out here in west Newton County about 8:15 pm - just a few early warm up rounds I guess. Pace will pick up close to midnight with magazine-sized bursts. I don't engage in wasting even practice ammo.

No, and no. We have more sense than that here in the backwoods of Gilmer County. One of the most stupid and dangerous practices I've ever heard of.

In my opinion anyone who does it should not own a firearm.

Just outside Snellville city limits. I hear a few random bangs that sound like gunfire throughout the year, and at least 3 or 4 every New Years eve.

I'm guessing that most in my area who are firing rounds on NYE are not legally supposed to possess or use firearms ...

I might engage in some celebratory gunfire, at midnight.

But standing on my back deck, shooting more or less directly down into the soft muddy ground, I think the bullets will become buried minerals (lead and copper deposits in the backyard) harmlessly.

Shoot up in the air? Not even in the country would I do that with anything other than small birdshot from a shotgun.

In the city, I woudn't do it at all, even with birdshot.

The only time it is acceptable to fire into the air is when you can do it as such to where the bullet comes right back down into your own brain pan.

So it's safe to do an AK mag dump straight up in the air, if you are in a remote area like in an aluminum bass boat several miles out into the ocean, or that big lake in central Florida-- the one full of alligators?

Yeah, that's the ticket. Safe for everybody who matters.

Last year, I heard shotgun pellets coming down through the leaves in the trees. I don't do it, have never really condoned it, although I have been tempted to throw the happy switch and let loose a Fifty-round burst. The cost of ammo keeps me from doing illegal and insane things.

    ... still tempted though. 8)

AtlantaJames, you have nothing to fear.

Channel 5 News stated moments ago that APD has stepped up patrols to combat random celebratory gun fire.

You and your neighbors are now safe.
