Authorities said Tuesday they are considering hate crime charges in the case of a woman who was tortured while being held captive for at least a week, and they are investigating the possibility that she was lured by a man she met on the Internet.
The victim was repeatedly called a racial slur while her captors sexually abused, beat and stabbed her, her mother said.
So somehow if this were a white woman the crime would be less reprehensible?
Or better yet, if they hadn't used racial epithets during the commission of a multitude of felonies the crime would be less reprehensible?
Maybe it's just me but I do believe that raping, beating, stabbing, and abducting another human being is pretty damming evidence that they hate them. Regardless of skin color.
Prosecuting for hate crimes in addition to the underlying felonies will not make the attitudes that caused the
racial hate disappear from our society. What if they hadn't used the N-word? Would it have not been a hate crime? Perhaps then every cross-racial crime is necessarily a hate crime?!
Hate crime = thought crime
