Can you make your own doorbell camera system ? without 3rd parties

Are there parts or a system you can buy that for a doorbell camera type system that does not involve google, amazon or any other company?

Can you use existing security camera system?
    This is for elderly person.

    Thanks

Short answer is yes. You'll need a PC running Windows or one of the Linux variants, software such as Blue Iris or other camera control/storage software, and one or more ONVIF compatible cameras (Google will find several at various price points and features).

This guy has a non-cloud home automation and camera system he developed himself. In fact, you can buy the entire product line. I'm intrigued in the automation part myself and HomeDaemon is not uploaded to anyone (ring or nest) for any nefarious purpose.

If you build yourself keep us in mind and let us know how you did.
