I have a 70's Varsity 10 speed I converted to a 12 speed with a new Shimano TX35.

I'm using a quick release axle with a new aluminum wheel.

However, on the non-cassette side the axle is just barely inside the dropout and can't go any deeper because the way the other side has to be in there.

I started riding it, and the wheel locked up because it went off-center. So I tightened the quick-release handle down mightily and it seems to be holding, but I'm leery of the setup.

Anything I can do about this to better improve safety?

often times those dropouts have little nubs to help hold it in place and position the axle properly. if you can weld, you might wanna put some nubs on there that the quick release can go over when completely loose, but can't when marginally tight.
