Battle of Gettysburg anniversary

Today is the 154th anniversary of probably the most important battle of the Civil War/the War Between the States/the Late Unpleasantness. It was a turning point in the war, for both the Union and the CSA.

There are stories about of groups like Antifa looking to bring more unpleasantness to the hallowed battleground this weekend. Time will tell.
I've lately been wishing to visit there again, as well as other historic sites, like Yorktown, Lexington, Williamsburg, Monticello, Mount Vernon, etc.

I've been to most of these in grade school on vacation trips with parents.
Make sure you get to Brandy Station. About 11,000 blue bellies crossed swords with about 9500 Confederate boys on Fleetwood Hill. It was pretty much a pure cavalry battle with only about 15% infantry. Some of it has been developed but a significant portion preserved by the Brandy Station Foundation.

It was the opening skirmish of Gettysburg.

The museum house was built about 1850 or so and used as an aid station during the battle. After initial treatment they were transported to the hospital in Culpeper about 6 miles away.

About 30 years ago it was sold for a residence and the owner was remodeling. He pulled some of the covering on the wall and found drawings, signatures, artwork and all that. Put up by the soldiers treated there, during and after the battle.

I could spend 4 or 5 hours looking at one wall. And go back the next week and spend another 2 looking at the same wall finding things I missed the first time.

More widely known as "the recent unpleasantries" by those of the fairer sex among us.

And known as the "yankee invasion" by those among us true to the beliefs.

Don't forget the fall of Vicksburg THAT SAME DAY.
Folk tradition holds that the Fourth of July (Independence Day) holiday was not celebrated by Vicksburg until World War II.[46]
