Well I obtained my replacement license today, and I decided to walk openly carrying my holstered pistol down the street. Well long story short, Im the only white guy where I live, so police always stop me. APD driving by saw my gun, and all 3 jumped out the car.

"PUT YOUR HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM!"

I put my hands on my head and was asked "why you have this; who you work for, etc.".

I showed them my brand-new, shiny Georgia firearms license, and they acted like they have never actually seen one!

I thought I was going to get shot. They took the gun out of my holster and cleared it. When they got back in the car they said, "Only in the south," whatever that means.

Wonderful first day with my license again, wasn't it! :D

Re: Watch out Fulton county!

Thats why I'm weary about Open Carrying, thats the very hassle I try to avoid. I think some LEO must be jealous because they carry Department issued guns and we carry our own personal weopons. I'm tired of LEO cers freaking out over someone Open Carrying in a OWB holster. Us sheep dogs know they can't protect us. Maybe this bothers them; who knows. Keep on carrying man.

hehehe. I like that sort of. Though I'm not out there for the sheep 1/10th as much as I am out ther for me & mine.

I hope you got the officers name/badge numbers. Is this not harassment?
Not really. At least not enough to "go after them". You could probably talk to the Chief Leo or their Sgt and ask they be informed that walking down the street is not a crime and they should never have touched his firearm - why make a non-dangerous situation a dangerous one? We've all heard/read/seen the stories where the proffesionals don't safely handle their boomsticks. Wouldn't it be just grand to have the leo try to clear the one the pipe & AD on himself or the GLFer... - but other than that if he wasn't "cuffed & stuffed" then they didn't really do to much other than just check out the scene.

And what about if I'm walking down the street and a LEO stops me,
disarms me, then robs me, since he wasn't a real LEO. How much time will I serve for providing a criminal with a gun? Bueller? Brady? Brady?

It means they ain't from the south. Or it means only in the south is one required to even have a license to openly carry a pistol in a holster, because "the south" wanted to control a certain segment of its population. Open carry without a license is not criminalized in the majority of states in this country.

Did you get the incident report number?

Also, a use of force report is required anytime police point a gun at somebody.

If you do not have a number, did you get names?

If not, do you know the exact time and location of the stop?

Are you a GCO member? If so, please PM me with your real name and your membership number.

AND so long as we avoid it out of fear and cowardice, this sort of harassment will continue, with "pro-gun" police officers using the excuse that openly carried firearms are "uncommon."

If you carried concealed for tactical advantage, fine. If you avoid openly exercising your rights out of fear of the police, shame.

MP, this one might be a little strong, IMHO. While I'm no coward, I am a realist who understands clearly that there are risks associated with the choices each of us make as it pertains to concealed vs. open carry. As mike316atl now has learned first hand, being right does not necessarily protect you from those who still don't know right from wrong.

I don't consider it shameful to make the choice to conceal carry vs. open carry even if part of my reason is to avoid situations like mike316atl got into. That's not cowardly or something to be ashamed of......it just might be sound logic and good reasoning.

Either way, right or wrong, concealed or open......it's a personal choice reserved for each of us and neither is something to be ashamed of.

After all, I've got the right to walk through the middle of downtown Atlanta in a white robe and hood carrying a burning cross at 2:00am......that in and of itself doesn't make it the right thing to do and choosing not to do it out of the possible (inevitable) repercussions just makes good sense sometimes.

Well, Bulldawg182, I cannot think of a pleasant way to let those who are fearful of the police know that they are contributing to the very problem they fear . . .

Is that better? :D

Oh, yes you can....and you have! Leading the charge against injustice and ignorance in the courts and the media is an excellent way to educate those who don't know right from wrong. Having all the Georgia Carry newspaper stories about our rights is an excellent way to educate the masses. The public whiplashing you folks gave that Sherriff who told all his deputies to arrest anyone carrying a gun even with a GFL was an excellent way to educate cops all over Georgia. This luncheon and the press it will receive is yet another. All the public whoppins you folks are laying on probate judges, county attorneys and commission boards all over the state go a long way too. As this continues, LEOs all over this state are going to be force fed the state laws and the proper way to enforce them thus making it more prudent a decision to openly carry for some.

There's always alternative methods and congratulations on finding so many!

"Only in the south,"
You know...

:soapbox:

If these asshats of the first order do not like that fact that we residents of the South believe in our Constitution here in the South, they can take their happy asses right back up North or to whatever other slimy hole that spawned them.

Get the hell out of my city, my state, and even my country. I do not need, nor desire, "protection" from any government official who refuses to recognize my inalienable rights. We Southerners do not need your attitude nor do we need your oppression.

For the record, I don't care where you're from, what you look like, to who or what you pray, the kind of music you like, or your sexual orientation, if you live in the Blessed South or wish you lived here, and you believe in our inalienable rights and our Constitution, then By G-d, you're a Southerner. :) Oh, and Cobb County probate is the Devil.

ETA: Keep the faith, Mike!

CC, OC, as long as you Do C, I'm happy. I'll OC because, as a poor single guy, I can accept the potential headaches of dealing with less-educated LEOs, and my boss won't fire me for getting arrested. If I had a wife and kids to feed, I might feel otherwise.
