44 Mag Mike: So you'd feel better about confronting a guy doing a mass shooting with an AR type rifle and emptying mag after mag of 5.56 mm rifle ammo?
Or a jihadist wielding an AK pattern rifle with 30 round mags or a 75-round drum?

The difference in stopping power between a .40 and .45 is significant to you? 3.3" of barrel vs. 3.1" of barrel is OK?

When I say I'm thinking of carrying a different gun in light of the mass public shooting terrorism threat, I'm talking about a full sized pistol with good accuracy at 25 or even 50 yards.
My sr9 would be my open carry weapon of choice with its 17+1 . But the ideal with the single stack shield. 40 is concealment its prefect for edc. I disagree with you in a situation with a terrorist like in orl. In that case me or anyone else carrying would probably have the element of surprise. I mentioned larger caliber after hearing this last nut job attempted to get body armor. Now if only they did a shield in 357 sig.

I don't see why changing pistol calibers as a response to the likelihood of body armor is presented. Unless you have true, purpose built armor piercing ammunition, there's not going to be any real difference in effect. Now that's not to say there's not going to be any effect, as getting shot even with body armor isn't pleasant. However, this is where the failure-to-stop drill comes in to play.

Practice your head shots, or shooting for the pelvic girdle.

If anyone is debating between capacity and concealment, take a look at X-Grip magazine adapters. It eliminates the gap when you use a full size magazine in a compact pistol, making a pretty much seamless grip that feels like a full size gun when installed. You could carry with the smaller mag, but have X-grips installed on your spare full size mags. Or carry "full size" when you want.

But it hurts the eyes and makes me puke in my mouth a little bit.
^ This.

But seriously, I'm not burdened by an excessive amount of money, therefore, I only have a few pistols. My previous EDC was a Bersa Thunder Plus .380 15+1, but the wife and I went to the range and bought cheap range ammo (I know, I know [-X ) and both of our nice clean properly lubricated .380's (her's a LC380) were stovepiping and failing to feed properly to the tune of 3-4 successive rounds, at best. That's when I realized her ability to clear a malfunction and get her weapon back into action was insufficient and my own took far too long.

Since then I have fallen back on my first gun purchase, a 686 SSR 4" with 6 rounds of .357 and 2 speedloaders, so 18 rounds total. Is it heavy? Yes. Is it concealable? Absolutely, I may have to wear slightly larger shirts, but the confidence I have out to 75 feet (6rnd group within 8" target - stationary target) is worth the weight.

My only consideration now is do I carry the .380 as a New York reload, or the Charter Arms .38 Undercover? Still need a lefty OWB holster for both, so this is just where I'm headed next. It will probably be the .38.

Now, please resist the urge to flame me for complaining about cheap .380 ammo failing to eject/feed properly... :runaway:

GV, a used Glock 17 might be worth trading into. It will shoot dirty ammo all day without a malfunction, give you accuracy just as good as a 686, will be lighter and easier to carry, and you won't have to reload as often.

" I have way too many bullets..." Said NO ONE ever in a gun fight. I carry a G17 with a 17 & 22 round spare as my EDC. Remember that you have to fight with what you have on you when the bell rings. No time out while I go to my car, office, or house to pick up spares. My EDC is nothing new; same boring set up for years.

YMMV, but I'm unapologetic about my selection.

I'm rethinking mine.

I'm looking at replacing my Walther CCP with something larger in a double stack 9mm. I'm looking at a FN FNS 9, Beretta PX4 compact and an XD.

A Ruger LCP Custom will be added to fill the deep conceal role,

It has nothing to do with recent events, just my getting bored and wanting something new.

Thank you, I may look into that. I actually really wanted a 9mm when I picked up the Bersa, but couldn't find one that I could put my hands on at the right price point. I may still carry the 686, but a little research, and possibly a new to me gun, is never a bad thing.

I find myself switching my carry guns around a bit these days, but only among handguns I have proven to myself I can shoot effectively and that I have confidence in. Some guns I carry depending on the situation (for example, I never go to a movie theater these days without a 9mm semi-auto that sports tritium sights), others I carry in lower threat situations during daylight when I want to enjoy a bit of nostalgia (like carrying an Airweight while out walking the dogs in my neighborhood) or running up to the corner gas station just to put some dead dinosaurs in the tank (a pocket carried 380).

I have confidence in all of these guns and the loads I've picked for them, and practice shooting them regularly.

Plus, variety is the spice of life!

I still carry the same full size M&P .40 with a spare mag. I have a friend who carries an AR pistol in a backback with several magazines everywhere he goes along with his 1911 on his belt. His wife carries the same 1911 and AR pistol.

First gun I bought for carry was the PX4 compact. It was so wide... being female... I was having issues concealing it well enough. Then I started noticing how many places have signs for no carry allowed. To avoid the BS I went to the LCP, knowing could effectively have it deep concealed 24/7... unless I went to the government or school no carry locations (obviously). With it I can carry even when I'm not supposed too. I want a larger cartridge though, but I don't want to loose the 100% conceal ability. Oh and I carry on my person, not in a handbag.

So yes, I too, have been tossing around the idea of another carry piece. The Walther PPS M2. Not cause of Orlando, but just because. Its slim... not really pocket able, but might be slim enough to get away with it most places without printing much. I would still have the LCP for my deep conceal. Probably move to carrying both... The PPS would have to go in a bag M-F if you catch my drift...

Get a Ruger LC9S Pro. My wife loves hers. Excellent trigger, small and slim.

The PPS is a fine pistol. Mine eats all ammo without any problems, shoots very tight groups, and the M2 grips are very ergonomic. Reliability tests by G&A had it and only 2 other single stacks making it to 1000+ rounds without a failure (the Glock and Taurus oddly enough). I can tell you that the 6 round mags are harder to find but are much more concealable than even the 7s.

After two more public massacres in the last few days (El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH), this thread is once again relevant.

Should we rethink our daily carry guns in light of these recent events? Who among us could put rounds into a rifle-armed goblin at your local shopping mall, school, church, library, etc? You might first see the bad guy from a pretty long distance away, more than 25 yards. Maybe out to 50 or 75 yards.

I switched from a single stack .45 to a large capacity 9mm with extra magazine a couple of years ago. So daily I minimally have 30 rounds of 9mm Hordany Critical Duty on me, with additional resources available in my automobile.
