Pastor Shot, Killed At Favorite S.C. Fishing Hole

    POSTED: 6:31 am EDT July 11, 2007

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Authorities say a pastor has been shot to death apparently while fishing in one of his favorite spots in Barnwell County.

Police say 51-year-old Phillip McCreary Sr. was shot once in the back of the head Friday along the banks of the Edisto River near the state Highway 39 bridge.

Sheriff Ed Carroll says McCreary's pickup truck wasn't taken and no motive has been determined for the killing.

Carroll says McCreary was a good man and this appears to be a senseless crime.

Church members say McCreary was an associate pastor at Macedonia Baptist Church for several years.

Not to argue your point but it seems that he may have never known it was coming. More of a case for why you should always be on defense, even when you’re somewhere you feel safe, like at home or somewhere very familiar.

very good point USMC. Seems this guy was practically alseep in order to get shot in the back of the head.

Unless he was shot from a distance! Guess we will have to wait for the tests to come back.

Or unless they ordered him to face away from them and executed him. I have seen that circumstance more than once.

A lot of fishing areas in Georgia are Army Corps of Eng'rs, aren't they? State Parks?

Can we get a DNR guy to chime in here?

What would happen to me if my boat was stopped on West Point Lake by the local friendly DNR officer, and he spotted an openly carried Hk pistol in .45 ACP?

    Yup they sure are!!

That would be awesome if we had some DNR folks as members!

I am not sure but there is a possibility we wouldn't be hearing much from you for a while! :jail:

It seems like it would depend on what they wanted to charge you with:

    Gun in state park?
Gun in Corps of Engineers territory?
    Gun in a WMA?

Maybe all three depending on just where you get stopped.

Although I have no idea what you might be charged with, I think Sharky pretty well summed up what would happen to you... :jail:

I wonder about the local lake here. It is TVA. Is that off limits?

Yes, well the dam is in NC but the lake is in both states and is a TVA impoundment

Is West Point a State Park? I think it is not.

Is it a WMA? No. There is one bordering the lake in places, though.

I do not know about the Corps of Engineers issue on West Point, and whether DNR folks may enforce it if there is an issue.

So, on West Point, it is up to some federal regulation? :?

Yeah. For all practical purposes, the civillian carrier is in possession of a firearm on US ARMY property while a guest at lands controlled by ACE.

I'll look for specific statutes a little later on.

I used to work for Troup SO, corps allows DNR and Sheriff's office to handle all criminal enforcement, also GSP.
