It was a black guy after all. But he was a cop, so it could go either way.

Shooter is claiming standard cop excuse-- he feared for his safety.

Gotta go read the details on this. It gets most interesting.

A black off-duty cop tried to help stop a crime. Another officer shot him.
The Washington Post,Cleve R. Wootson Jr. 12 hrs ago

A “friendly fire†incident in which an off-duty St. Louis policeman was shot while coming to the aid of fellow officers has taken on racial overtones after an incendiary claim by the injured officer’s attorney: The officer was viewed as a threat because he was black.

When the off-duty officer who lived nearby heard the commotion and arrived at the scene Wednesday night to help, two on-duty officers ordered him to the ground but then recognized him and told him to stand up and walk toward them. As he was doing so, another officer arrived and shot the off-duty officer "apparently not recognizing" him, police said.
I think I see part of the problem there; the officer interjected himself in the middle of something without an understanding of what was happening. It was already being handled by other professionals before he had to put his personal touch on things.

Sorry whenever a non-criminal gets shot. However, as Forest Gump would say "Stupid is as stupid does." and in this instance entering a situation that on-duty, uniformed cops have in hand is stupid. Hope he recovers quickly.

He did not know they had it "in hand" when responding. The stupid one is the one who shot him. Read the article to find out why.

So the officer was in the process of following the directions of the other present officers, when another one arrived who didn't know the game plan, and figured shooting was better than not shooting, for some reason.

Lesson: If you're new to the game, find out what the game is before you start taking charge.
