When I sold my travel trailer last year, I wouldn't take a cashier's check. There are too many scams using them and it may not show up as a fraudulent check until weeks later. I may have missed out on a legitimate sale or two, but I was ok with that. Although I had planned to take cash only, I did end up taking a personal check. But only because the buyer was relatively local and his check was from Navy Federal Credit Union, which has a branch near my work. I didn't sign the title or anything until I had cash from the CU. They came & looked at it one day, brought a check the following week, then came back a week later to tow it home. I took the check to his CU and the teller verified that the funds were there to cover the check. So after she cashed it for me, I called to let him know & we set up a time for them to come and pick it up. I signed the bill of sale & title when they picked it up. I realized after they gave me the check and left, that they had nothing in writing anything about the deal. No contingent bill of sale, no receipt for the check, nothing, so I felt my risk was relatively low. It worked out, but I wasn't comfortable with it until I had cash in hand.

I would not do this. It is not failsafe. Is your credit union willing to give you a written guarantee that they will make payment good if funds fall through? No? Then doing this "all the time" means nothing.

Don't do it.
This. My credit union has even told me that while they do call and verify funds, they do not guarantee that the funds will be there when you go to cash it. They also aren't guaranteeing that the check is not fraudulent. Basically, they won't stand behind their assurance that the money is there and available to you.
